Unveiling the Magic of Community Theater: A Haven of Connection and Growth
by Celia Simpson
Sometimes I think we must be crazy. In a society where public speaking is one of the number one fears, it seems strange that anyone would be willing to step out on a stage and open themselves up to an audience of strangers and their loved ones. I myself find my stomach twisting in knots before a presentation, yet I have been involved in several productions. So what is it about community theater that makes us willing to face the anxiety head-on?
A Safe Space for Expression
Community theater provides a unique sanctuary for self-expression. It’s a place where individuals from all walks of life come together to create something magical. For many, it offers a safe haven to explore different facets of themselves, to shed inhibitions, and to embrace vulnerability.
I recently performed in “The Most Massive Woman Wins”, a play where I had to act out the inner thoughts of many women in my life and beyond when it comes to body image and a sense of self. It was a physically and emotionally vulnerable experience and one that I wasn’t quite prepared for when I took on the role. After each performance, we held talk-back sessions with the audiences to discuss their thoughts on the show and their own lives. Those discussions opened my eyes. I knew many of the audience members prior to the show, but through those discussions, I was able to get a glimpse inside their head and their experiences. Through providing avenues to discuss difficult or challenging topics, community theater offers a space for vulnerability and acceptance.
Building Bonds Beyond the Stage
But community theater is more than just a stage for expression; it’s a platform for building relationships. Every performance is an opportunity to form deep connections with fellow cast members. The shared experience of bringing a story to life fosters bonds that transcend the stage. These connections often extend beyond the rehearsal room, creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie akin to a family.
At the beginning of each show, I have found myself uncomfortably shifting in my seat, wishing I had convinced one of my friends to try out with me or thinking I should go home sick. Yet as rehearsals go on, as I find myself dancing on stage with people I barely know or killing time in the dressing room, friendships begin to form. Staying up late testing lights and building sets is the first step in a recipe for relationship-building that I never realized I was making.
The Antidoate to Loneliness
Community theater can be an addiction. When you open yourself up to your fellow cast members to create this living, breathing story together, you are able to connect with them on a level that goes beyond your everyday connections. It can bring you closer to strangers, friends, and even family. In today’s world where we find ourselves more lonely than ever, community theater can be an antidote. It offers a haven where individuals find connection, belonging, and purpose. As we navigate the ups and downs of the everyday, community theater can be our comfort—where strangers become friends, and where hearts find a home.
